Innovative Heart Care
Mitral Valve Repair
The mitral valve controls the flow of blood through the left side of the heart. When it's not functioning properly it can be a life threatening condition. During mitral valve repair, the cardiothoracic surgeon repairs the valve restoring a normal flow of blood. Mitral valve repair patients can return to a normal activity level without having to take blood thinners (which are required after mitral valve replacement surgery).
Vascular Intervention for Congenital Heart Defects
This procedure repairs a hole in the heart without surgery. In the cardiac catheterization laboratory, the interventional cardiologist uses a catheter to implant a device containing self-expandable mesh discs into the heart's hole. Once in place, the discs expand, closing the hole in the heart. Patients are usually hospitalized overnight, and able to return to work in about two days.
Limb Preservation
Limb preservation uses angioplasty to improve poor circulation in a foot, toe or leg. The cardiologist positions a tiny balloon in the obstructed artery. The balloon inflates, restoring normal blood flow and circulation. Limb preservation can reduce lower extremity amputations in diabetics by as much as 75 percent.
Carotid Artery Stents
This minimally invasive procedure is used to treat a blocked carotid artery. Using angioplasty, a mesh stent is placed inside the carotid artery. Once in position the stent expands, widening the artery and increasing the flow of blood. Studies have shown that carotid artery stenting is one of the safest and most effective ways to prevent strokes in elderly patients.
